Feeling A Bit Pleased

I wear aprons in the kitchen.  I've learned that my clothes need to be covered, I'm klutzy.  I've gone through quite a few aprons over the years.  Finally found a pattern that I liked and I've made it more than a couple times.  My latest apron is wearing out.  Truly threadbare in a few spots, not to mention the un-removable stains that have accumulated.

The other day when I (partly) cleaned out my sewing room closet, I saved this one piece of printed denim that I had planned to use for an apron.  I just knew I had enough fabric there. (And was surprised that I actually managed to squeeze an apron out of what I had.)

Today was the day.  I had put off mending The Husband's shirt long enough.  And if I was going to sit at the sewing machine, I was going to make it worth my while.

All the thread that's left.
A couple hours later the apron is finished.  I broke most of the sewing rules I learned in Jr. High School:   I hadn't enough fabric to cut the apron lengthwise, so it is done cross-grain.  It'll not hang super well, but I'm not sure I care about that for just an apron.  I had to seam it down the center, so it wasn't placed on the fold.  I folded the straps before sewing instead of making a tube and turning it right side out.  I eliminated the button and button holes for the straps and simply sewed the straps to the front.  (My previous apron annoyed everyone who saw it because no matter what I did, the strap was twisted around the back.  Sewing it directly to the apron solves that problem.)  It isn't even really very cute, except for the fabric.  I might sew a decorative button on the straps at some point - but maybe not.  It is definitely utilitarian and I'm just fine with that.

The best part of all is that I was determined to use what I had and not have to buy a single thing.  It was dicey there at the end, I was certain I was going to run out of thread.  But I managed. Of course, my freshly vacuumed sewing room now has threads on the floor.  😏

And it feels good to have a little project done.  I like being productive.

I've practiced and practiced the song that I'm playing for Robert on Sunday.  Yesterday's rehearsal with him went fairly well.  I just need to keep my wrist and hands pain free as much as I can, which is a challenge because I pretty much always hurt in those spots. (The baby blanket I've been crocheting for the newest-expected great-grandchild will be completed soon and my hands will relax a bit. But what fun I've had making it.)

Grateful today for the ability to keep the windows closed - it's been crazy windy out and that makes me sneeze.  At some point we might turn on the air conditioning, and that's another thing I'm always grateful for.  Also grateful someone reminded me that our local grocery is having a bratwurst "festival" with all proceeds going to MS.  So off we went for a bratwurst lunch.  What a treat, we don't often go out for food these days.
