Weekend

So the other day we had the guy out looking at the garage door opener.  Apparently it was beeping and having trouble opening in the morning because we have always turned the main power switch off overnight and that meant the battery in this new opener (things have changed so much in the world since we built our house 23+ years ago).  Easily solved problem:  leave it on overnight.  He assured us there's very little chance of someone using a remote to open the door at night.  I felt like an idiot.  But he was kind and patient with these two old people who sometimes struggle with the latest tech that seems de rigueuer for every single thing these days.

The Husband came home from his "guys lunch" the other day - walked into the room bent over, unable to stand up straight again.  That dang muscle spasm that's so troublesome for his degenerative disc disease.  I didn't waste any time getting him some heat then cold on his back.  We've been quite diligent with it, and since we got it on the minute we realized it was an issue, I think we've prevented it from worsening.  I really hate to see him unable to stand / walk properly and in such pain.

That meant we skipped the Bishop's Storehouse this morning.  That's a lot of bending, lifting and twisting that is so hard on a person's back. I am very leery of making things worse.  So home we stayed.  And it's been lovely to have that pressure removed.  We slept in, went for a walk (something the dr. says is good to do), had a lazy late breakfast and now he's sitting again with the heat pad on his back.  Almost time for the ice pack.  What a blessing it is to have the tools to help alleviate some pain.

This morning's walk was lovely.  We are under a low cloud ceiling.  So it's kind of gray.  And quite windy.  The trail looked so pretty to me, I had to take a picture.  Though as we all know, the picture will never convey the emotion I felt.  It just felt good to be strolling along, hardly anyone around,  with the pretty fall yellows showing up in the early morning sun, what little light was filtering through the clouds.

I'm so grateful for an entire day at home.  (I'll probably be restless to do something before it's over, but that's often the way of things.)  Grateful that The Husband agreed the leaves can wait for another day.  It's that bendy-twisty thing that raking causes that again, is so hard on a person's back.  I'm grateful for something to put in the crockpot for dinner, that we have some things to watch and some things to do as we putter around the house.  And I'm grateful that so far we've avoided another two-week stint in the rocker for The Husband.  He doesn't ever complain, but I can tell when he's hurting.
