The guys worked on one furnace / a.c. / heat pump all day yesterday. Left us with some rudimentary instructions for the new electronic/digital thermostat. "Enjoy your new furnace" he called out as he left.
huh.
Waited and waited for it to kick on. And waited some more. Then the thermostat came up with an error message. Somehow, the thermostat lost connection with the furnace. Sigh.
No heat at all on that side of the house. I'm actually a bit pleased with myself. I didn't scream or yell or pitch a fit. Wasn't unkind or unpleasant to the woman on the phone. I just kind of took the punches and let them come.
Put the little space heater in the powder room - that toilet is a pop-out over a basement window so it gets more cold air around it than anywhere else in the house and those pipes are on the outside wall, in the pop-out. Am always concerned about those pipes freezing and bursting.
Then because the space heater was on and I was afraid of fire (fireman's daughter here.) I spent most of the night on the couch so I was around and easily aware should there be a problem. Couch is fine for napping. All night sleep was elusive.
So, here we are day two. They should be going full speed ahead on the second furnace / a.c. units. Instead they're still troubleshooting the first problem. I'm glad I built in a day extra just in case something went awry. That's often the case with us - things going awry.
Now, I'm not complaining about my blessings. I know indoor heat (not to mention all the furnaces and air conditioning units we have) is a blessing. And even for some segment of the world's population a luxury. But I will be glad when it's all installed properly, working properly and we have proper heat and air.
Poor technician installer - he said this has never happened to him in his 7 years of doing this work. I think it bothers him. But I'm counting on the company sticking to their satisfaction guarantee and fixing all the troubles. They won't get paid until it's done right.
Me? I long for the old days when tech wasn't required for every single thing. I'd love an old thermostat that I could set and forget - our previous one worked fine for 23 + years. I long for a paper manual to help set a schedule. The QR code for the downloadable thermostat operator manual isn't convenient, easily decipherable or even accurate. And I long for simpler days, simpler life. I'm aware that sounds like an old person speaking.
Grateful today for at least one currently working furnace. Grateful for gas fireplaces that help the temp in the house to remain somewhat tolerable. Grateful we had a space heater. And grateful for another new day to try to have the Savior's Spirit with me. I'll never stop trying for that.
