Suspension Bridge - We Did It!!

Woke up early (like usual) and headed out.  Arrived at the trailhead just before six and wouldn't you know it - there were already 4 cars in the parking lot.  We forged ahead.

We've heard about the Bear Canyon Suspension Bridge here in Draper since it was finished about 6 years ago.  We wanted to head up and find it.  I wasn't quite sure we could do it, I'd heard tales about how steep the trail (my bad knees) and how busy (it really is) the trail up generally is.  We had some friends tell us we'd have no trouble.  And they were right!

We ran into several people out for their morning run. One guy lapped us while he was doing the trail loop.  It's just over two miles around so we knew we wouldn't be getting in lots of steps.  But the elevation rises quite a bit, the switchbacks are kind of steep in spots and I'm a nervous-Nelly about narrow trails with cliff drop-offs on the side. (I feel the same about those cliff-hugging roads that make me want to sit in the footwell of the car!) I tried to be brave, but I admit to slow-stepping (shuffling?) it across a few spots where it was narrower than I like.  Just like the old-lady I am.

It's a true suspension bridge.  Hung from the cables. Sways from side to side with quite the creaky noise whenever someone steps on it or crosses.  A bit nervous making. But very fun.  It's only about 185 feet across, but it feels like it's high above the little creek.  And the views across the valley: phenomenal.  I love the sunrise anyway, but from up the side of the hill - watching the sun creep towards us was just the best way to begin the day.  We even had a little wild rabbit keep us company along part of the trail.  Our efforts to spot deer or other wildlife (there are many signs posted warning that it's cougar country) failed to find any.  No matter, it was a lovely morning anyway.
