The trail I walked on this morning is asphalt - an inch or two thick - so a firm, durable surface. Heading home I noticed a plant (yeah, most likely a weed, but a plant nonetheless.) that had poked through the asphalt several inches from the edge and was now growing up through the asphalt.
Couldn't help but think there are myriad lessons/parallels/corollaries there.
