This morning we walked a route we haven't walked for a while. Last time we walked it, they were doing some kind of construction (laying some pipe for something) so we stopped in the road and looked in hopes that we'd find a coin.
Because: several months ago we walked that intersection and found a bunch of foreign coins. One bigger coin was embedded in the asphalt and no matter what we tried we couldn't dislodge it. So last time, with all the construction, we had hoped the coin would be visible and easily picked up. No real urgency or goal, just following up (and curiosity) on something we'd previously seen. The construction guys came over and kindly offered to help us find whatever it was we were looking for, they thought we'd lost something. After explaining and that it didn't really matter we went on our way. Interaction mostly forgotten.
This morning we decided to walk that way, lots more trucks and equipment that we were dodging as we navigated through that very same intersection. One guy saw us and headed toward us. I expected him to tell us it wasn't safe for us to walk through and would need to walk a different way.
Nope, he asked us if we were the couple looking for that coin a few weeks back. My mental jaw dropped open. He remembered? Not only did he remember, but a few days ago he had actually seen the coin in the road as they were scraping the asphalt, picked it up and saved it. He even looked it up to see if it has any value. And apologized that he left it in the pocket of his other pants so he couldn't give it to us. Totally impressed, I told him to just keep it. I hope he finds some fun use for it.
That is a first-rate example of awareness, kindness and decency. In all that they've got going on with that construction and his work, he not only remembered but wanted to give us the coin. That's the kind of guy I want to know. 😊
