And A Quieter Week

Which I so needed.  The garden veggies were planted.  And then some of them were planted again.  Wasn't the weather, we just bought them so early (which wasn't really early) and the pots are so tiny, the plants pretty healthy that they just got rootbound.  Totally all messed up.  They were planted anyway in the hopes that somehow they weren't quite dead yet.  We're maintaining a watchful eye.

We took advantage of cheap Tuesday movie tickets and saw a movie that was barely worth the cheap tickets, but it was an afternoon out and we bought a (rare for us) tub of popcorn (kettle - The Husband's favorite). We enjoyed it.

I managed to get in a bit of reading.  Trip planning is in process.  Morning walks are different now that the days are lighter.  It means more people are out and about on the trails and streets.  I like the quiet of the winter better. We have seen quite a few deer, one morning there were 12 if I remember right.

Yesterday morning on our walk we saw this cute family of geese. Seven young'uns.  Just darling.

The hawthorne tree is already losing its blossoms.  😔 It's such a stunning tree.  I see a lot of those trees around and I am certain ours is one of the loveliest. Our tricolor beech is finally turning pink.  It's always been such a favorite of mine, until it turns crispy in the summer heat.  But so far, so good.  And our blue atlas cedar in the front isn't happy.  We had the arborist come out and look at it.  He isn't sure what's going on with it, thinks the late freeze we had bothered it, but I'm not convinced that's the problem.  He recommended a foliar fertilization to boost it, which - of course - is costly.  And we've acquired some big chunk bark for around the base.  Apparently there's too much water for the tree (which I think is strange because the grass is barely getting enough and they're on the same sprinkler lines).  The bark is supposed to help.  I am less confident in this guy (even though he owns the company) than the usual guy, but the usual guy has left for other employment.  We've 23+ years invested in all our trees and this particular one is the only one we didn't plant ourselves. Back when we were younger/fitter.  :^)  I sure hope it makes it.

And our daughter and I received a fun gift.  From our other daughter. For Mother's day.  So thoughtful, generous and kind. From a company that sends the plant potted in a special pot that you only have to check once a month and it waters itself as needed from the reservoir. Mine is a pretty tricolor hoya.  I love it.  Our daughter's is called mistletoe cactus.  Both are so pretty.  The two of us are nervous about killing them in spite of the company's claims that they're for those plant parents who don't quite have the green thumb they wish. Those thumbs and many fingers are crossed for success.  Thank you, our daughter/sister.

Were able to sing happy birthday to our son, what an unusual treat it was to be invited over to help celebrate.  We love all our kids and grand-kids, though we don't get to see them as often as we'd like.  It's fun when they reach out to say "hi" or tell us something they've had going on.  They're all growing up!!

Today's been cloudy, gray and rainy.  A lovely day to stay home (after all the morning errands).  The laundry is nearly finished, I've puttered around doing this and that, and I've enjoyed being inside.  I've text chatted with my lifelong friend in WA which is always a treat, though it doesn't happen near enough.  I like a low-pressure day.

And I liked this article: Graduation Talk  I often like the articles in this column.  This is graduation season and we've received several invitations.  I think one we'll skip, but I'm thinking hard about what kind of small token we can give - we've known her since she was born, we love that entire family.  Creativity isn't my strong suit, but I'll try to come up with something.

I'm grateful today for accomplishing some errands, for a night out with friends tomorrow and a new class on Friday to go to.  Wednesday will only be the second time for me at that class but I'm so grateful I tried it out.  I like it better than Monday's class.  I'm grateful for something to look forward to, everyone needs a bit of that, I think.
